What's she like to drive?
This is one of BMWs best cars and yet rarely available to hire. A true Grand Tourer that also makes a very good job of being a fine press on sports car. Unencumbered by a nose heavy V8, pressing the Start button you can hear the six cylinder 3.0 litre engine will be smooth, crisp and responsive. Being of surprisingly lightweight design, it also enables the handling to be smooth, crisp and responsive, a relatively big car that you can encourage to press on through the corners pretty swiftly and confidently on those huge rear wheel drive tyres, as a recent sprint over the wonderful Takaka Hill confirmed.
Of course if you just want to waft it does that very, very well indeed, and you can also bring along three fellow travellers to appreciate it as well in thick, padded luxury leather. With one of the best insulated soft tops on the market, and a myriad of luxury features and touches, including a stunning stereo system, this is a car to soak up the sun and bask in the beautiful unfolding landscapes that are New Zealand. And with the roof down, you’ll see so much more of them from this luxury four seater convertible for hire.
What do I need to get used to?
Feeling like a cat that got the creme de la creme leather? This is a very special, very rare big four seater BMW convertible we’re talking about. As well as being a full power roof convertible, you can also leave that up but lower all windows at the touch of a button, giving you an open air feel but still protected with a big sun shade. That includes the rear glass window, that can also be lowered and raised independently – how cooling is that?! It’s an auto so it’s easy to drive, but it also has tiptronic manual gear change so you can still have some more responsive fun. It is quite a big car but still nimble and also easy to park with sonar front and rear.
What about safety and reliability?
This is a modern BMW so it’s laden with safety features such as ABS, airbags and traction control, including a function that ‘pre-dries’ your brakes in wet conditions. In the unlikely event of any reliability issues, you have roadside assistance included in your hire charge anyway. She’s regularly serviced and has to pass the Certificate of Fitness (CoF) test required for rental cars every 6 months.
What condition is she in?
All aspects are in good condition. The dark wood trim looks superbly understated, and all the thick cream leather seats have been specially treated and rejuvenated. Whilst it has above average km for its age, it’s a very special and comfortable place to be, with the roof offering very effective soundproofing and electric everything for your controls.
How much luggage can fit?
A surprising amount, as the boot is large, barely affected by the roof being down, and if only 2 of you travelling there’s masses of further space in the rear seats. For people travelling in those, we recommend they shouldn’t be taller than 5′ 9″, but it will depend on how tall those in front are. With the roof up you can press a special lever in the boot and claim back a bit more height in the boot where the hood normally gets stowed. Please refer to the Seating & Luggage tab above for exact luggage dimensions.
And the best driving tracks from the same year as the car would be?
Absolutely nothing from 2007 worth mentioning IMHO….shocking, but there it is…..Check out the rest of our classic best road trip driving tracks here and put RentAClassic on your play list…
How fast will she go Mister?
She can get up to 100km/h in under 7 secs….that’s quite quick enough….
How would a certain Mr Clarkson describe it?
The steering wheel is connected to the front wheels with a big soft bag full of melted chocolate….I think he felt it was a little too wafty, but he wasn’t driving the Sport model that our one is….
And the RentAClassic description?
