“We had a great day up country in this delightful wee Merc. A special birthday treat for Grahame and now he wants to buy one! Thanks so much to Stephen and Angus for arranging this – such a fun and memorable day.”
“This little car made our week! Touring wine country with the top down and just eating up the mountain roads – excellent fun! Thanks Stephen for your help.”
“What a fantastic car for our South Island Road Trip! It has made the long drives more fun and being able to drive some of the coastal roads with the top down will be an unforgettable experience.”
“Girls roadie to Brunner. Fabulous weather, fab cars, hood down both ways, fur coats perfect! Loved it!”
What's she like to drive?
Superbly smooth cruising with the ability to show a real clean pair of heels round the bends should you want to, backed up by the supercharger offering consummate overtaking legs as required. When driving, your eyes are drawn down those retro bonnet power bulges, beckoning you to pursue the horizon. Automatic 5 speed transmission makes for an easy, relaxed drive or you can make it more involving and take control anytime you want to with the Tiptronic clutchless change system.
What do I need to get used to?
Surely sports cars weren’t meant to be this comfortable and inviting? Leather seats, zoned climate control for the driver and passenger, cruise control, brushed aluminum interior, white retro dials and a wind deflector to prevent unpleasant drafts. But comfortable doesn’t mean flaccid, the steering is very direct and nicely weighted, with the ride cushioned yet firm. In it’s glorious imperial red this isn’t a car for shrinking violets, and you might get asked to perform the folding metal roof trick several times. The South Island is ideal convertible weather but the sun is surprisingly strong – between November and March, a hat and sunblock are essential top down accessories.
What about safety and reliability?
Of the highest Mercedes standards, with front and side airbags for both passenger and driver, very positive brakes with ABS, ESP traction control, (tested that), and in the extremely unlikely event of issues you have full roadside assistance included in your hire charge. This model is the revised R170 SLK version that came with further safety and suspension improvements over it’s predecessors. She’s regularly serviced and has to pass the Certificate of Fitness (CoF) test required for rental cars every 6 months.
What condition is she in?
Almost showroom standard. We only acquire cars of a very high standard that we’re sure have been well looked after inside and out. This model is no exception with an extremely low mileage.
How much luggage can fit?
That depends on how much you like the roof down. With the Mercedes SLK roof up, around 2 suitcases and a couple of medium holdalls can be accommodated. With the roof down however, one of those suitcases and holdalls will have to stay behind. This video showing the mechanism will give you a better idea, (note it’s of the same model car but not the exact car you’ll be driving). Do refer to the Seating & Luggage tab above for exact dimensions, and we always recommend the use of soft baggage. Several overseas couples have successfully enjoyed use of the car with luggage for over a week or even two though!
How fast will she go Mister?
You’ll arrive at the 100km/h legal limit surprisingly smoothly and swiftly……but of course, you can have a lot of supercharged fun getting there….
How would a certain Mr Clarkson describe it?
“Oh great, it’s my car but half the price (and better)…”
And the RentAClassic description for the Mercedes SLK?
“…well strictly speaking he was comparing a later faster SLK model to his larger Mercedes SL……but we think this is a car that both the sexes will be fighting to drive…Mercedes SLK = Superb, Luxurious, & Keen as German mustard…”
